Reimagining Family Advocacy in Washington, D.C.

Stable Families Advocacy Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit legal and family advocacy organization serving parents, youth, and families throughout Washington, DC. We provide holistic legal advocacy and interdisciplinary support that helps families overcome barriers, protect their rights, and remain safely together whenever possible.

By bringing together attorneys, social workers, parent advocates, youth advocates, and healing-centered services, we offer a coordinated model of support that addresses the legal, practical, and emotional challenges families face. From prevention and early intervention to reunification and long-term stability, we partner with families every step of the way.

Why Washington, DC Needs a Different Approach

Evidence-Informed. Family-Centered. Healing-Informed.

Across the country, interdisciplinary family defense and parent advocacy models have been successfully implemented in jurisdictions including New York, Colorado, and Washington State, among others. By integrating legal representation with coordinated family support, these models have demonstrated stronger outcomes for children and families, including:

✓ Improved reunification outcomes
✓ Shorter foster care stays
✓ Increased permanency
✓ Reduced repeat system involvement
✓ Stronger family stability
✓ Better outcomes while maintaining child safety

Yet until now, the Nation's Capital has lacked a fully integrated interdisciplinary family advocacy model that brings together:

✓ Legal advocacy
✓ Parent advocacy
✓ Social work
✓ Healing-centered services
✓ Long-term family stabilization

This gap is especially significant because most child welfare cases in Washington, DC involve allegations of neglect rooted in housing instability, poverty, unmet mental health needs, and limited access to supportive services. At the same time, the District's reunification rates remain below the national average, underscoring the need for a more coordinated, prevention-focused approach.

Stable Families Advocacy Center was created to change that.

The Stable Families Model

Stable Families Advocacy Center brings together legal advocacy, family support, and healing-centered services into a single integrated framework tailored to the needs, strengths, and goals of each family.

Families receive:

Advocacy Across Multiple Systems
We support families navigating interconnected challenges involving child welfare, juvenile legal matters, housing conditions, custody disputes, and education barriers.

Families are supported by advocates who help them navigate systems, identify their goals, and ensure their voices remain central throughout the process.

Integrated Legal and Family Support
Legal representation is strengthened through social work, therapeutic support, wellness programming, visitation support, and community-based resources.

Support Across Every Stage of Need
Families receive continuous support from early intervention and crisis response through reunification, healing, and long-term stability.

Healing-Centered, Family-Focused Practice
Our work is grounded in dignity, partnership, cultural responsiveness, and the belief that families have strengths that can be supported and strengthened.
